Another DirecWay annoyance

Direcway proxy abuse
Sitting down last evening to do some work on websites revealed yet another annoyance with DirecWAY. The valuable site for working on domain name services DNSstuff is unavailable to users of DirecWAY. There is another way, bypassing the proxy by using a different port, but other web services may not be so kind as to run their servers on multiple ports in order to serve those of us stuck with DirecWAY.

In passing and passing

This week has been odd in making some old connections. Last Saturday an old school-mate was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sunday it was removed and reports are she is recovering well.

Then on Tuesday I got an email from a classmate in junior high school. Growing up in a military town it's not that unusual that he moved away and we lost touch, especially before the advent of the internet eased communication. It was a great surprise and I look forward to renewing that friendship and catching up on what life has been like for the last two decades. Finally in mentioning the contact to my parents I learned another school-mate and friend in high school had taken his own life a couple of years ago. All and all a bit of an odd week in regards to the old stomping grounds.

New Drupal beta looking good

Drupal 4.7 Beta 3 was released on Monday. Since then people have been poking, prodding and testing to see what portions are solid and where there are still chinks. Starting Wednesday I set it up on several sites and have been quite impressed. The updater and its new Ajax interface continue to improve. Looking through the list of bugs at Drupal.org there don't seem to be many of great consequence. Others will doubtless crop up, but it is great to see such a great release being baked.

Hey Apple: Where's the Vidcast?

As expected Steve Jobs' Keynote Address to the Macworld conference brought new Intel based iMacs and Powerbooks. And of course you can go watch the video as a streaming show. However there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get it downloaded to the great new iPod Video.

Shhh! Don't tell anybody

Apparently it is considered poor taste over at KLAS TV to mention the Adult Entertainment Expo. The show which runs concurrent with the Consumer Electronics Show each year has been in Las Vegas for years. KLAS's coverage, however, goes a long way to prove the puritanical taboos rule even in Sin City. The station has little compunction about detailing any sort of violence but seemingly cannot even mention the name of the aforementioned Adult Entertainment Expo calling it instead "another convention at the Sands".

Treo 700w unveiled

CNet News calls the new 700w a Frankensteinian mishmash. At CES yesterday I stopped by the Palm booth and took a minute to try one out. The first impression is great. It seems like an improved Treo 650 that has taken the best of physical characteristics from the Blackberry and the Treo 650. Testing it proved somewhat more difficult. Less than a minute into trying to figure out how the new interface works it died. Dead. Maybe the battery needed charging. So plugging in the power cord it shows it's charging, and still nada. Nothing. So I'll have to depend on reviews like those such as CNet and so far they're less than impressive.

I am become as sounding brass

Televangilist Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was retribution for promoting peace in Israel. While not unusual that I would take issue with the words of Mr. Robertson even this is an amazing new low. In pondering the proper response the only thing appropriate that comes to mind is the following passage from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Four letter word

Stop asking when things will be done and start contributing is one of the messages in Bert Boerland's post Done is a four letter word on the Drupal project. There is a lot of truth in what he says. Open source projects like Drupal are made better with more cooks, not less. This is true. As there usually is, however, there is more to the story.

Backtracking the Drupal project the code freeze for the next release (4.7.0) was scheduled for September 1 and then pushed back to September 15. In the same announcement it was noted that a 4.7.0 release might take "several weeks" after the code freeze. And, now several months later here we sit without a released 4.7 and little progress. Though the latter bit, about little progress, isn't correct. The feeling to many people, namely the many folks implementing Drupal on servers around the world, those folks checking to see if this next great version of this great tool, don't see much progress. November came and went with more hopeful talk and now we're into the new year with Beta 2 aging a few weeks.

While it can be really frustrating watching and waiting, helping out in the forums etc. the frustrating part is feeling like little progress is being made. The truth is that gobs of work are being done each and every day. However, if like many Drupal users you don't get into the nittiy gritty details it seems to be posts every few months, or weeks, that speak optimistically of an upcoming release punctuated by waits that grow ever longer in the mind's eye. While it takes a little digging at least with open development processes you can see proof of progress if you take the time to look for it. On the other hand with closed development processes it's a different deal.

Thanks but now I've got finger prints on the screen

Google had a really cool header graphic yesterday in honor of Louis Braille's Birthday. Only problem is now I've got fingerprints on my screen. When will they honor the birthday of the person who came up with screen cleaners?
