Today's New York Times has an article suggesting the end of the megapixel race may be near. The article points out that at the 8 megapixel resolution of many point-and-shoot digital cameras on the market today, the average user can easily create a print large enough for display at home. The article goes on to suggest that other areas of development including the ever increasing quality of movie recording with digital "still" cameras, more features for sharing photos like wireless and changing form factors as the need for shaping a camera around a film-canister and take-up reel recedes.

The article follows last month's announcement by Nikon that they will largely abandon the sales of film based cameras and equipment.
