All I needed to learn in PHP I learned in Drupal

May 3, 2009

Last weekend I ventured to Bellingham Washington for a beautiful weekend at LinuxFest Northwest. All and all it was a great weekend. The weather cooperated and the meeting was wonderful.

Along the way I bought some tickets for the LinuxFest raffle. By chance one of those was a winning ticket and the prize included picking from some great titles. I'll write more about these great titles soon. First however, the title that wound up to be a disappointment. I picked up a copy of [amazon 1593271735 inline]. From the title I was hoping to find some wicked cool stuff in it.

More fun with mount points

April 18, 2009

Last fall I wrote about a mistake from years past where goofing up mount points on a filesystem could really cause some interesting side-effects. Well quite by accident I stumbled into a fun new way to blow up a system while working on yesterday's problems.

First a bit of background for those who are not familiar with UNIX style mount points. Before a disk is mounted on a UNIX system the place it will be mounted looks like a plain old directory. On OS X these directories are collected in /Volumes so there will be a set of directories here representing the various disks and the disks themselves will be mounted on top of these directories. So with disks named Ranch and Barn the directory looks like /Volumes/Ranch and /Volumes/Barn. It is with these directories that SuperDuper was off and running to replicate Ranch to Barn.

Trials and time machine

April 17, 2009

Twenty-four hours in it appears I now have a disk migration working. Usually it's a simple task. Unpack the machine and fire up Migration Assistant after going off to make and drink a few cups of coffee and presto the new machine is up and running.

Well that worked for the first many dozens of processors in the collection. This time, however it was not to be so simple. Each time Migration Assistant would run it would exit with the same error message.

Getting ready for Drupalchix

March 22, 2009

In the days and weeks before the arrival of our newest addition to the family we're getting ready to have folks come stay at the house. One of the things we've traditionally resisted is having a "Guest Room". Frankly paying rent on a room and keeping it up just for the few nights a year it would be used has never made much sense to me. When somebody drops by we have a very nice airbed that does a reasonable job.

This time, however, things are a little different. The folks will be in town and staying a little longer than normal so something a little better would be handy. We considered going out to find a futon mattress to make for a more regular bed.

The problem always came back to the same old discussion of what to do when we weren't having guests. So we placed a call to the local furniture rental shop and viola. Days later a brand new bed and bed frame arrived and was setup. It couldn't have been simpler. For less than the cost of one night in a hotel room we now have a very nice queen sized bed in the "guest room". The best part is in a month or 6-weeks we simply call and have it taken away.

Getting started with Twitter

March 21, 2009

twitter_logo_header.pngEverywhere you look people are tweeting or twittering. If you can find a newspaper it would almost certainly contain a story about Twitter. Many interesting conversations and exchanges happen on Twitter each day.

This brief introduction, however, looks at another use for Twitter. Perhaps you're not yet ready to take the leap to spending your free time telling everybody around the globe what is happening all the time. That's just fine. We'll look at setting up a Twitter account and how it can be used to track a special event such as a family reunion.

To get started head to Twitter.com. Once there look for the large green button that says "Get Started".

Kicking off Drupalcon with APIs

March 4, 2009

Drupalcon is off to a great start. Yesterday afternoon and this morning we met all kinds of great Drupal folks while passing out the free Acquia t-shirts and sharing the news about several recent releases. If you haven't had the chance to check out the new Acquia Drupal Stack Installers. The installers bring a Windows and Mac OS X installer to the desktop that install and setup all of the components necessary (Apache, MySQL, PHP and Acquia Drupal) to get started running a Drupal site.

Stealing from the airlines

February 28, 2009

Yesterday there was a story on the news about voice being given to the thought of pay toilets on airlines. Now we're all certainly tired of fees and some airlines, like Southwest, are taking advantage of that to advertise their lack of fees.

An exchange this morning on the flight has me thinking about how we think about the airlines.

Economy Plus

For some background you need to understand Economy Plus. United has implemented this "tween" class. It is basically economy but for a fee you get seats with extra legroom. It costs more and you get something for it. The "extra" amount isn't as much as business class or first class, but it is a higher priced ticket. Generally these sections are the front of the economy section from the exit rows forward.
