Campbell fundraiser in Druango

November 10, 2003

Sen. Campbell raised $20,000 in his re-election bid Saturday night. The event at an art gallery in Durango drew about 100 people.

Meanwhile I'd love to write about some updates from Mike Miles or Brad Freedberg but both websites sadly run out of campaign events in October. There are plenty of Coloradans looking for a replacement for the incumbent in this race. We need some fresh news about how the candidates are going to make a difference.

Sourceforge outage

November 9, 2003

There seems to be a sourceforge outage today. Problematic for those of us who are attempting to get new sites up today. It does bring to light some concerns about having so many great projects in the open source realm hosted by a closed-source company.

Directories, paths and folders

November 9, 2003

It occurs to me that one of the problems for those who are transitioning from Macintosh OS 9 (and some Windows users for that matter) is confustion because there are several changes in naming conventions. I'm starting a list of key synonymns.

  • Directory - Folder
  • User - Account
  • Alais - Symbolic Link

The list is growing and if you have items to contribute comment on this item. This is the first step in describing the differences in the way things work in OS X.

Runaway Jurry

November 9, 2003

We went and saw Runaway Jury last night. It's a pretty good show. It has some good twists and fits with other Grisham books in having a message of and right winning in the end. It doesn't have the kind of building action and suspense that The Firm did but it's a good show worth putting on the Netflix queue.

Constitutional Amendment to ban same sex marriage

November 8, 2003

Colorado congresswoman Marylin Musgrage is introduced the Federal Marriage Amendment earlier this session. The proposed amendment to the Constitution would restrict the definition of marriage to one man and one woman.

The Denver Post has this article quoting Colorado legislator Kevin Lundberg.

"Marriage consisting of one man and one woman has for millennia created an environment of stability and compassion," said state Rep. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud, at a news conference at the state Capitol. "It is the most effective way to maintain a safe, nurturing environment for children."

A human resources person once gave me an interesting tool for determining if something is discriminatory. To determine if a statement about a group is prejudiced substitute the group with another. For example if a quote is about women one might replace the statement with a racial minority.

The same thing could be applied to this statement. The same statement could read: Marriage consisting of one race has for millennia created an environment of stability and compassion. It is the most effective way to maintain a safe, nurturing environment for children.

Tough loss for the Rams

November 7, 2003

The Colorado State Rams suffered a tough loss Friday night. After a mediocre first half the Rams bounced back, entirely on the back of quarterback Bradlee VanPelt.

Postfix Enabler for OS X 10.3

November 7, 2003

Panther users have an easier way to enable Postfix on their machines. This will enable users to setup local mail servers more easily. I haven't tried the program yet but will give it a shot this evening.
