What's with the maps

In the category of things that really don't matter... Watching Real Time with Bill Maher tonight I was puzzled by the map in the background. The map is a map of the United States with cities highlighted on it. Normal enough. For example New Mexico has Albuquerque and Santa Fe, Arizona has Phoenix and Tucson. Colorado has Denver and Utah has Salt Lake City. All pretty normal. Generally large cities and some smaller state capitals. The curiosity is that Nevada has only Carson City and not Las Vegas. Odd.

Words from the wise folks

There is a quote each day in my planner book. Today's is a particularly good one. "When I was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world," said Jim Henson. Jim, you died young but you definitely made a difference in the world. The world could use some more of the bright colors and care-free happiness your creations taught us to value.

Not so impressive

Watching the opening ceremonies of the Athens Olympics. NBC's coverage is less than impressive. It seems that in Salt Lake we were treated to a lot more coverage and a lot fewer commercials. It might have been a very impressive presentation but we'll never know as NBC chose to cut away all too frequently. They are also not at all friendly to folks (like us) with a DVR... Many of the blocks are 7 hours in length, making it very difficult to catch the parts viewers are interested in. For example if you want to see a softball game tomorrow morning you're in for taping a 7-hour block. One can hope

The good and bad news

Wired has an article about TiVo offering network services to all TiVo Series II owners. They can now do many things that previously required the home media option. At the end of the article is a note that DirectTV sold its stock in TiVo this week and may be switching DVR providers. This makes the need for a TiVo unit that can [Killer App|do RSS feeds] all the more important. Users will soon need the ability to separate their DVR from their Satellite receiver or face being held hostage by feuding companies. Already many of th

A thought

Dave Winer says today "It's a sick thing to define yourself in terms of the misery you think you're creating." It makes me think about people I know who define themselves by trying to ensure everyone around them conforms to their world views and end up alienating people because they don't even understand how condescending and "I'll prove I'm better than you are," they come across to others. I usually think to myself "how sad your world must be."
