Fourth of July advice

Just in time for the 4th of July. Bill Schneider has some advice over at New West Network about how to navigate a boat ramp. The column has both some good hints for first-timers and reminds the experienced boat-rampers among us to be kind.

Of course the best advice might be finding a time other than a busy holiday weekend for the first trip to the boat ramp.

I read the news today.... oh boy...

Generally in writing here I refrain from commenting too much about my employer. Today, however, the daily police listing of calls has one that is too good to pass up. So here for your Friday evening reading is the crime of the week:

THEFT Larceny - Grand - Building MAY 23 2005-Monday at 08:22 05-05-23-08462

Location: CENTER ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT OUTREACH 050557

Summary: A SURVEILLANCE CAMERA OUTSIDE SUITE 400 WAS STOLEN BETWEEN 6:50AM AND 6:55AM ON 5/22/05.

DISPOSITION: INACTIVE

Must have been a very effective surveillance camera.

On faculty meetings

Since it is time for end-of-year faculty meetings at educational institutions far and wide, I thought I'd share this post about faculty meetings.

Presidential tales

The weblog Wonkette has some choice excerpts from First Lady Laura Bush at the White House Correspondent's Dinner.

My favorites include:

"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

"George's answer to any problem at the ranch is to cut it down with a chainsaw. Which I think is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld get along so well."

Friday funny

During the daily work online I came across this statement describing a high school laptop program: "students become experienced with high end computer software such as Windows, Office, and much more."

I wonder now if they use high-end General Motors station wagons for drivers' education too.

Phishing phun

I was just reading one of the oh-so-frequent phishing scams purporting to be from eBay. It reads in part

Per the User Agreement, Section 9, we may immediately issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend or terminate your membership and refuse to provide our services to you if we believe that your actions may cause financial loss or legal liability for you, our users or us.

And here I thought the whole idea was to buy and sell goods through auctions, including transactions of money, aka a legal liability (assuming the auction was not fraudulent). If only it actually said something so humorous.
