Riding for Pleasure

Having grown up owning and riding horses I was always able to ride whenever I wanted. It was a integral part in me wanting to have horses be a part of my life forever. However, I think that my views of riding have evolved as I have grown older. As a young person I thought that if you had horses that you needed to go out and show to win no matter what the sacrifice. There was a lot of back stabbing, fighting and rudeness. Everyone was always fighting for the best trainer, the best outfit, the most prestigous shows. I must say that I did get cought up in it. As I went away to college I took my horse with me. In order to pay for her care I decided to work at the stable she was at. $500 a month for a college student was a lot of money. I learned a lot about the equine show world from the back side. What I saw did not impress me. I could not belive that I had been part of it. I began to take a look at my real motives for riding. My horse soon came to retirement age and I decided to let someone have her as a broodmare and small time eventer. I pretty much left the horses behind. Besides doing some exercising and riding other peoples horses I took myself out of the scene. What I did not realize was that it was not the horse part that I did not agree with, it was the showing and the lifestyle. After a few years I had the opportunity to get another horse and decided not to make the same mistakes I had before. This time it was going to be about the horses and the enjoyment I got from riding. Although I have been through a couple of horses I think I have gotten back the feeling of pleasure when I ride.

Time flies

The cliche is time flies when you're having fun. With that measure my life has been living in Disneyland. It is hard to think that a year ago I was still commuting between Nevada and Colorado. In fact this weekend marks the year anniversary of the big move. The move concluded on Memorial Day last year. This year we'll need to have a get-together on our ranch.

Not so neighborly

For the last couple of months we've been trying to work with some vicious dogs being kept by a neighbor. After several requests the neighbors have chosen to do nothing about the constant barking. Recently Sarah was told that the constant barking of the pack of dogs is a desired trait. As you can clearly see in this brief movie these vicious dogs are continuing to come through the fence and have already attempted to bite or bitten ourselves, our dogs and our horses. Yet, in our neighbor's action this is our problem.

Update: Vote about what you think about this situation.

The text at the end of the video points out that our neighbor emerged during the taping of this video and proceeded to do nothing more than watch.

The Fridge Guy

Well, today I received my first official "additional duty" as a WOJ. I am in charge of the Bravo Company fridge. This sounds trivial but is not. It is the most visible duty in the company. The pilots and crew take a well stocked fridge very seriously. If something is not there, it comes down on the fridge guy.

Our fridge has been run extremely well in the past few months so I have big shoes to fill. In fact, other companies shop at our fridge. We actually make money selling snacks and drinks out of the fridge. The turnover is so high that I am going to wind up shopping several times a week to keep it properly stocked. If I do well, I will get the respect of the entire Battalion. If I do badly . . .

I am looking forward to the next WOJ arriving sometime in June so I can pass this job on to him. Perhaps I will be flying by that time.

Other that the new job things are about the same. I am getting to know my co-workers and think we will get along fine. In fact, I am going to a promotion party tonight for three of them who just went from WO1 to CW2, leaving me as the only WO1 right now.

Growing pains

I spent too much time helping out a friend today. How is it possible to spend too much time helping a friend? Well, this friend is a professional who didn't have time for the problem their Internet Service Provider created. The ISP had a problem and changed some passwords or something... who knows... but they didn't tell the customer anything about it. So instead of conducting business my friend spent the day burning money. Or might as well have. When you're a professional and time is billable a minor slip-up by a company is a big deal.

In this case the solution was pretty simple, change the password. It is more the hours that go into getting the company to own up to their changes. As companies grow from very good small companies into mid-sized enterprises it becomes increasingly difficult to make sure that the old-time customers continue to get the service that brought them to the company to begin with. In this case the unnamed vendor is a company I've done business with for more than a decade. It is a great shop and I'm confident that the people at the helm can get it on the right track. I just hope they know it's off the rails now.

Not in School

As usual, the only thing constant is change and uncertainty. I was sent home early on Tuesday evening to prepare for Air Assault School on Wednesday. On Tuesday night I got a call telling me I would not be attending school because I had not completed the necessary prerequisites. I knew that soldiers had to complete a 12 mile road march within a few months prior to school. I hadnt done that but it is usually is overlooked by command. Our commander, however, is new and wanted to play things by the book.

Since I am not going to Air Assault and not flying, I am doing odd jobs and taking care of administrative matters. I went and got all of my new digital pattern ACUs (army combat uniforms). The best part about these uniforms is that the boots are brown suede and do not get polished. I have helped in the maintainance shop with odd jobs also. The rest of my time is spent studying and convicing the other pilots to quiz me on subjects that I will need to know when I fly again.

There is a good chance I will fly in about two weeks. I hope so. It looks like my progression training will be conducted by a relatively new female Instructor Pilot. She seems like she will be a good teacher. She has already started helping me with my studying so the flying might progres a little bit faster.

I am attaching two photos of the new airfield. Each of the three companies has 10 aircraft. You might also see that we share the airfield with some Apaches. I am sure you will notice that there are no orange doors. These helicopters are the real deal. Note the horse head on the nose. That is my company symbol. We are "The Lancers".

Great new Drupal downloads site

The downloads section over at Drupal just received an overhaul. It is great. The new design makes it easy to see the preview images of themes and get information about the many modules. It is little wonder that Yahoo and Dan Gillmor recently picked Drupal as the vehicle for projects.

Sandy Valley Job Fair

Last Saturday Keystone Academy in Sandy Valley hosted a job fair for all in the Sandy Valley area. Employers including Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Primm Outlet Stores, Trail's End, the US Army and more were present with information about their workplaces. In addition to the employer related exhibits students from Keystone Academy put on demonstrations of stage fighting (in the photo above). Complimenting the old west acts like some precision bull-whip work, the Las Vegas Viper club brought out their beautiful collection of Vipers.

Freeedom to publish

Despite the First Amendment, America has anything but a free press. Despite the ever greater power of the media in America, truth and freedom seem less apparent. Special interest groups, including but not limited to, the big corporations that own most mainstream publications, exert direct and indirect pressure over the images and words that appear. ... To be able to regularly photograph or write from the heart for an American magazine is a rare privilege these days.

Galen Rowell, 2001

In his 1993 book From Freedom to Slavery Gerry Spence outlines the new government-corporate conglomerate that is eroding the under pinnings of American democracy. The consistent willingness of many in our country to give up their rights to corporations and to sit idly by as citizens are stripped rights in the name of patriotism.

New WOJ

Hey all:
I reported to my unit today. It looks like I will be in Flight 2, Bravo Company, Fifth Battalion, 101 Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborn (Air Assault) Division.

Things are a little bit disorganzed because the battalion recently switched airfields. Also, there is a lot to do with deployment in the works. I met most of the Company and they all seem pretty cool. Unfortuntely, due to several factors that I cant really discuss, I will likely not get to fly at all for quite a while. I will kill some time by going to Air Assault school for two weeks starting on Wednesday and then probably be given some additional duties.

I am bummed about this turn of events but it is out of my control entirely. I will talk to the lead instructor tomorrow and see if anything can be arranged.

Otherwise, things are good and I dont have any real complaints.
